It won't work if you don't time things correctly and accidentally destroy the sign, though. If you timed it right, Link will start swinging his sword without you needing to press the button. Immediately follow that up by pressing the Confirm button. Now hold up your shield and as you continue to do so, press the attack button to swing your sword.
